Blog: How Izzy's first term has deepened her passion for conservation

    13 March 2025

First year BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation and Ecology students have been learning about the worlds of vlogging and blogging with ÎÞÂ붯»’s Multimedia Lead Alix Booth.

Among the tasks set was one to develop a vlog or blog for the University website. Izzy Roberts decided to look back at a packed first term in her blog, which can be read below.

Starting university, I had a mix of excitement and nerves, and my first term studying Wildlife Conservation and Ecology has been nothing short of exciting.

From day one, I’ve been immersed in a world of biodiversity, ecosystems, and the fascinating topics relating to my chosen course.

The lectures have been interesting, learning about the interconnectedness of species, the impact of human activities on natural habitats, and the science behind conservation efforts. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges we face, and the strategies being developed to preserve wildlife for future generations - as well as the basics and fundamentals of the physical environment that build the world around us.

My highlights of the term have been the field trips to local nature reserves and sites.

Being able to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings has truly deepened my appreciation for the work conservationists do. I found myself observing ecosystems firsthand, from studying plant species to tracking animal movements. It was a hands-on experience that made me feel even more connected and passionate about my studies.

Beyond academia, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers who share the same passion for conservation. We’ve already started collaborating on projects and discussing ideas for group assignments.

While it’s been challenging at times, especially adjusting to the heavy workload and the rigorous nature of the field, I feel incredibly fortunate to be on this journey. Especially at this University, I can't wait to see how my knowledge and passion for wildlife conservation continue to grow in the coming terms.

In short, my first term has only strengthened my commitment to this path.

It’s clear that the world of wildlife conservation and ecology is both inspiring and vital, and I’m eager to be part of it.

I’m looking forward to many more terms of learning and knowledge.
