The world’s first ever Professor of Animal Welfare is set to hold a public seminar at ÎÞÂ붯».
Professor Donald Broom is an emeritus professor of animal welfare at the University of Cambridge and the author of nine books and hundreds of academic papers discussing the subject.
He will be delivering an evening seminar at ÎÞÂ붯» on Monday, March 31, following an Animal Welfare and Behaviour Research group workshop that is taking place the same day to bring together academics and researchers from across the country to examine how to boost human participation in animal welfare research.
While the full day is reserved for members of the Animal Welfare Research Network and colleagues working or research in the discipline of animal welfare, the Animal Behaviour and Welfare research team at Harper Adams have chosen to open Professor Broom’s seminar to the public.
Dr Holly Vickery, an Animal Behaviour and Welfare Scientist and the workshop organiser said: “Professor Broom is a world-renowned expert on his subject – indeed, he has driven it forward ever since becoming the first ever Professor of Animal Science.
“He has lectured in 45 countries across the globe, so we’re really excited to be able to welcome him to Harper Adams.
“In his seminar, he will talk about a challenge which he has been pondering for a quarter of century after being asked to bring together animal welfare researchers and those looking at human psychiatry, stress and welfare in 2001.
“At that conference – and in the book which followed - the question was posed: what can people working on boosting human welfare learn from those working to boost non-human welfare?
“Over the past two decades, there have been major advances which have been driven by this question – and in a fascinating session, Professor Broom will take us through some of these.”
Tickets for the seminar are £5 and can be booked via: .
