    BSc (Hons)Food Industry Technical Professional Degree Apprenticeship

    Course overview

    The Food Industry is one of the largest, most dynamic and fastest-growing sectors of industry. Every day, producers, food manufacturers and retailers make and sell millions of innovative food products, such as drinks, cakes, biscuits, ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook food, sandwiches, wraps, fresh fruit and salads to consumers in the UK and around the world.

    Technical Professionals are passionate about their industry and ensure all products are safe to eat, of consistent appearance, taste, and texture and take great pride in their work.

    There are a wide variety of Technical Professional roles: Assistant Food Technical Manager, Quality Manager, Shift Quality Manager, Hygiene Manager, Product Innovation and Development Technologist. They ensure the safety and quality of food products; this includes improving existing products and launching new products; working with operational teams to develop good practices and procedures; and developing good relationships with internal and external customers. They may be employed by a grower, a food manufacturer, or by a retailer.

    Technical professionals utilise their knowledge to ensure the smooth transition of food and drink products from farm to fork. They ensure that technical and quality standards are achieved whilst maximising profitability to meet customer requirements. They have a set of skills, knowledge and behaviours providing the opportunity for an exciting and rewarding career in the food industry.

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will achieve a BSc (Hons) Food Science and Technology degree. Following the successful completion of an integrated End Point Assessment, Work-Based Project and Technical Interview you will be deemed to have met the Degree Apprenticeship standard.

    Entry requirements

    The entry requirement for the degree apprenticeship will typically be a minimum of three A levels at Grade C or higher, or the equivalent (in UCAS points) or a Level 3 apprenticeship in a related discipline. Current employees who already have experience in the industry, and would like to become an apprentice, can discuss enrolment with our team of specialists. Apprentices must have the right to work in England.

    Applicants without GCSE English and Maths or equivalent will need to achieve this level within the first two years of the apprenticeship programme. Achievement of the qualification will be supported by the university.

    End Point Assessment (EPA)

    Each apprenticeship works towards an independent End Point Assessment where the apprentice will be assessed to see if they have achieved and can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required in their occupational role.

    Preparation for the End-Point Assessment process will be tailored to the apprenticeship and will begin in the final year of studies. Successful completion of EPA will lead to the award of the qualification (where applicable) and the apprenticeship certificate. End Point assessment typically involves submitting a work-based project and professional discussion to confirm competence but will vary for each apprenticeship. The course leader will provide more information about your programme requirements.
