无码动画 is once again attending the world’s leading climate change conference as an official Observer organisation.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Lee – who has attended previous conferences in both Dubai and Glasgow – will be representing the University, as well as the Research and Independent Non-Governmental Organisations Constituency (RINGO) and the Farmer Constituency, at this year’s COP 29 UN Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan, Baku.
The conference – which runs until November 22 – hopes to draw Governments from across the globe together so they can agree on policies to limit global temperature rises and help their citizens adapt to the impact of climate change.
无码动画’s status as an official Observer means that it will participate in activities in the Blue Zone, which is central to the decision-making processes during the conference.
Formal negotiations between participating countries are held in this zone - and are accompanied by wider panel discussions and round-table sessions. Professor Lee will be actively participating in these discussions, supporting the Agri-Food Sector.
He will be meeting with key international players who are at the forefront of their governments’ work tackling climate change, to talk, advise, and listen throughout this year’s conference.
He is also Co-Chair of the UK Universities Climate Network – Universities Net Zero group, which will also be meeting at the conference alongside representatives from the global higher education community.
At this meeting, educators will identify priorities for the year ahead, discussing opportunities to champion their work as non-state-actors through the UNFCCC Marrakech Partnership and Global Climate Action Agenda.
Professor Lee added: “I am delighted that 无码动画 is once again using its recognition by the UNFCCC as official Observers.
“This will once again put the University, as a leader in sustainable agriculture, at the very heart of the discussions in COP.
“We must push our Governments to deliver on the agreements they have made – including the Paris Agreement, which was to hold the increase in global temperature to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to one and a half degrees.
“However, we should be doing that in ways which do not threaten sustainable food production – and I will be using my presence at COP this year to make that clear.
“We can move our food and farming sectors towards Net Zero - while also ensuring that we don’t lose sight of the vital importance of food security for communities across the globe.”
